Fishing Report: Still hot as summer winds down
Steve Peterson shows off a Lake Granby lake trout.
Not much has changed this week. The Colorado River in Rocky Mountain National Park is fishing very well for brookies; dry flies in the evening have been awesome. The Colorado is fishing very well with a hopper dropper combo in the afternoons.
The area lakes are fishing very good lake trout continue to hit small jigs, power minnows or Gulp produced very well last week. Rainbows and Browns are hitting small spoons near the shore in the evening. As the fish are rising cast your spoons to their ring. Powerbait along the lake shores have been catching lots of 12-14” rainbows. Grand lake is fishing very well for 15-20” lake trout along with an occasional large fish.
Pike at Williams fork continue to hit topwater baits in the evening, 3&4” ripple shads on 3/8 oz jig heads are getting a few throughout the day. Trollers are catching a few rainbows and browns long lining small crank baits over deep water and lake trout 60-80 feet deep with silver and gold spoons.

The rainbows in the area lakes seem to be on the fast track to their spawning grounds. Lake trout have started to suspend in the deeper water. Tubes, jerk shads and some hair jigs are working well for those fish. We are starting to experience late season ice conditions, please be very careful heading out. Bernie Keefe has been guiding in the middle park are for over 20 years.
